Modern Witchcraft in 2026: Inside Our Samhain Celebration

Ancestral remembrance, Italian food, Halloween shenanigans, and what modern witchcraft looks like when we come together.

This Samhain, I opened my home to The Liminal Flame, the spiritual community I've been building here in North County San Diego, for our first big Halloween celebration. I wanted to honor the traditions behind the holiday without losing the fun of it all, so we planned an evening of ancestral remembrance, ritual magick, live music, and, because I'm Italian, plenty of homemade lasagna.

What unfolded was a beautiful reminder that modern witchcraft doesn't have to look a certain way to be meaningful.

A Samhain Celebration with a Little Italian Flair

Of course, I wasn't about to host a gathering without feeding everyone!

I'm particularly proud that I managed to successfully pimp out my dad, Franco, for the occasion. If you've watched our Italian Folk Wisdom series on YouTube, you already know he's quite the character, and apparetnly he's developed a little fan club. Between making homemade lasagna together and me talking him up, I kid you not, half the guests were hoping to meet him!

He didn't actually attend the party (although he knows I'm a witch), but apparently, he and my stepmom did drive by the house to check on me because I had a bunch of strangers showing up for a witchcraft gathering. Honestly, nothing says Italian family quite like a little parental surveillance....even when you're 36 years old.

But that's something I've come to appreciate about spiritual gatherings. They don't always have to be formal, mysterious, or serious. Sometimes the most meaningful connections happen over a shared meal, a good conversation, or a little laughter before the candles are even lit.

Honoring Our Ancestors at Samhain

Samhain is traditionally associated with the end of the harvest season and the beginning of winter. For many modern witches and pagans, it's also a time to honor our ancestors, acknowledge the cycles of life and death, and reflect on those who came before us.

We explored these themes during both our virtual and in-person gatherings, creating space for remembrance, gratitude, and reflection.

One thing I wanted to emphasize during our ceremony was that ancestor work doesn't require us to romanticize our family histories. Not everyone had a beautiful relationship with those who came before them. Some connections were complicated, some were painful, and others were with people we never had the opportunity to know.

Honoring our ancestors doesn't mean pretending every relationship was perfect. We can acknowledge the complicated parts of our histories while still recognizing the people, experiences, and generations that shaped our lives. Or better yet, we don't have to even acknowledge the ones who don't deserve our energy and remembrance all together.

My friend Ocho also brought his setup and treated us to a beautiful live musical performance, adding another layer of depth to the evening. As we lit our ancestral altar and moved into ceremony, the atmosphere became quieter and more reflective.

The ritual itself remained off-camera, which was intentional. Some experiences are meant to be shared with the people present rather than documented for an audience.

From Sacred Ritual to Halloween Shenanigans

Now, don't get me wrong. We weren't spending the entire evening contemplating mortality: I PROMISEd EVERYONE A HALLOWEEN PAAAAARTY, AFTER ALL!

After honoring those who came before us, it was time to celebrate the living. We turned up the music, started dancing, and apparently got a little too enthusiastic with the fog machine. Turns out, there's such a thing as too much fog in a living room. Who knew?

Before long, five of us were waving brooms at a smoke detector, desperately trying to clear the air while laughing our asses off. We eventually got everything under control and, naturally, continued the dance party, fueled by Jeff’s especially potent, spooky sangria.

The festivities continued well into the evening, with the remaining night owls eventually settling in for a game of One Night. After Edgar finally managed to get us through the rules, we were off! Although, by that point, we were getting distracted every five minutes, so shoutout to Katie, the real MVP, for somehow keeping us all on track!

Was it graceful? Absolutely not. But I love that our evening could hold both a meaningful ancestral ceremony and completely ridiculous Halloween shenanigans. That's part of the beauty of being human, isn't it?

This Is What Modern Witchcraft Looks Like to Me

For me, modern witchcraft isn't about looking the part or having the perfect collection of magickal tools. It's about how we practice, the traditions we choose to honor, and the connections we create along the way. Our Samhain celebration reminded me that spirituality doesn't have to be serious every moment to be meaningful.

You'll sometimes hear me call The Liminal Flame a coven, although we're more accurately described as a spiritual collective. Our community is rooted in witchcraft, but we welcome witches, yogis, pagans, mystics, empaths, and anyone curious about exploring spirituality.

We don't have to walk the same spiritual path to gather around the same fire.

I know firsthand how transformative spiritual community can be. For years, I gathered with friends for full moons, new moons, rituals, and conversations that challenged me to grow. Eventually, many of those friends moved away, leaving me one of the few still here in San Diego.

Creating The Liminal Flame has become my way of keeping that tradition alive and passing the torch forward. This Samhain reminded me that the magick isn't something I have to create for everyone. Sometimes it's simply about opening the door and allowing people to come together and create it for eachother.

The Magick Continues: Come Gather With Us!

If you're looking for a spiritual witchcraft community in San Diego, a Southern California spiritual collective, or an online space to connect with like-minded people, I'd love to welcome you to The Liminal Flame.

The Liminal Flame hosts both virtual and in-person gatherings, typically one or two each month. Our practices are inspired by the Wheel of the Year, with seasonal celebrations, full moon ceremonies, witchy yoga rituals, and plenty of opportunities to explore magick and connect with like-minded people.

And if you'd like a behind-the-scenes look at our Samhain celebration, I filmed a little witchy vlog featuring the preparations, homemade lasagna with my dad, and some hilarious party moments.

Because modern witchcraft doesn't always look like what you'd expect. Sometimes it's a sacred ancestral ritual, sometimes it's sharing Italian food with new friends, and sometimes it's five people waving brooms at a smoke detector.

And honestly? I wouldn't have it any other way.
