Summer Solstice Ritual to Embrace the Light and Shine Bright

The Summer Solstice also referred to as Litha is one of the most magickal moments in the Wheel of the Year and a beautiful way to connect with the natural world in the month of June. It marks the longest day, the shortest night, and a turning point as the Sun reaches its peak in the sky, radiating its strength as pagan tradition honoring the sun's strength. This season invites us to celebrate the abundance of sunlight and the sun's power , the beauty of summer flowers, and the growing season while reflecting on life’s cycles. Through ceremonies and rituals, we can carry the energy of the Sun as we transition into the darker half of the year.

This year, my Moon Tribe and I will be celebrating a special Summer Solstice ritual designed to honor the season, embrace the light within and around us, and align with nature’s rhythms. Together, we’ll create herb satchels to ignite our senses and honor this ancient festival, and reconnect with our magick. This ceremony reflects everyone’s unique energy and creativity, blending personal touches with themes of the season. The best part? It’s easily adaptable into a solitary ritual for those celebrating alone. For more insight into Litha ceremonies and the meaning of this turning point, check out my Litha post for inspiration.

Whether you’re exploring ancient traditions, grabbing flower garlands, or creating your own Litha rituals, this ritual will help you honor the cycles of nature and celebrate the radiant strength of the Sun during this powerful midsummer moment.

Simple Supply List for Summer Solstice Ritual

  • Base oil (sweet almond or jojoba)

  • St. John’s Wort, lavender, chamomile

  • Citrus and rosemary essential oils

  • Rosemary, sage, rose petals

  • Small bowl and cloth satchels

  • Candle and lighter or matches

  • Paper and pen for intentions

Easy Summer Solstice Ritual to Celebrate the Longest Day of the Year

This ritual is all about crafting satchels of magick to rekindle the intentions we planted earlier in the year. It’s a playful and powerful way to remind ourselves that the magick we seek has.

1. Grounding and Anointing

To start, we will ground ourselves. Think of this as the moment where we press "pause" on all the noise of the outside world. We’ll be using a special anointing oil that my moon sister Alel will be crafting (and you can, too!). Here’s the recipe we'll be using for our ritual oil:

  • Base oil: Sweet almond oil or jojoba oil (or spring water if you prefer)

  • Herbs & Flowers: A mix of St. John’s Wort (a traditional herb for the solstice sun), lavender (for calm and clarity), and chamomile (for that soft, nurturing light).

  • Essential oils: Add a few drops of citrus (like orange or lemon) to symbolize the Sun, plus a few drops of rosemary for grounding and protection.

To use, place a dab on your forehead, over your heart, and on the palms of your hands, imagining golden light pouring down from the sky as you connect with Mother Earth and feel the warmth of the sun.

2. Chant and the Kabbalistic Cross

Now comes something introduced to me by my moon sister, Alel. As we move into sacred space with a chant, we activate the Kabalistic Cross, a powerful ritual rooted in the mystical traditions of the Kabbalah. Originating from Jewish mysticism, the Kabalistic Cross is part of the Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram but is often used on its own to align with Spirit and divine forces.

We begin with the words, “At mal couth,” magical, breathless moment when time seems to stop before the sound fades again. meaning “To you is the kingdom.” This invocation centers us, connecting the physical and spiritual realms

Building Energy Through Sound: Intentions need movement, and sound carries them forward. Alel will guide us with mantra chanting, accompanied by the rhythmic ringing of a bell. Together, as we hum, we’ll feel the vibrations align with the energy of the earth and sky. The bell’s rhythm builds gradually, mirroring the rising energy of the season, lifting us into alignment with the cosmos.

3. Seasonal Reflections and Lore

Once the energy settles, Phoenix and I will take some time at home to reflect with the group about this meaningful time of year. The Summer Solstice, or Litha as I shared in my recent post, reminds us of life’s fleeting beauty, much like midsummer's eve . It’s the lightest time of the year in the northern hemisphere—a moment of growing abundance when the Earth is alive and flourishing.

The solstice holds a rich history of traditions, from European cultures honoring the Oak King to ancient Egypt and China, where the solstice sun marked a sacred turning point. This celebration of light, fertility, and life by ancient cultures is a beautiful reminder that we are part of something so much greater.

4. The Herb Ritual

Next, we’ll work directly with the Earth’s gifts, each of us selecting herbs from my collection based on what calls to us in the moment. If you’re doing this at home, consider using herbs that resonate with your intentions—trust your instincts. Each member of the group will stir the herbs clockwise, infusing them with their energy, intentions, and Spirit. Once everyone has connected with the blend, we’ll fill cloth satchels to carry home. Any leftover herbs will be burned in the bonfire as an offering to the season. If you’re doing this at home, you can burn the leftover herbs in a small cauldron: I'd recommend adding a little mayan copal or resin as a stabilizer to your incense blend.

5. Reflection and Group Discussion

I believe magick comes not just from the rituals themselves but from the connections we share with the goddess . After the herb ritual, we’ll open up a group discussion with these prompts:

  • What keeps you magickal?

  • What keeps your energy balanced?

  • What are you brave enough to release or celebrate this season?

  • What’s holding you back from simply having fun?

We’ll talk about the beauty of being both gentle and wild, celebrating the light AND acknowledging the shadow. If you’re at home, take some time to journal these questions or simply reflect on them.

6. Setting Intentions and Power Words

Finally, we’ll set our intentions. This is where the satchels transform into more than just a collection of potent herbs—they become a vessel for our Spirit and a guide for the year ahead. As we prepare to shift toward darker energies during the winter solstice or reflect on the warmth of midsummer celebrations, I’ll guide everyone in choosing power words or intentions that resonate deeply. These could be anything—from abundance and prosperity to creativity and inner peace. Think of them as personal beacons, reminding you to bask in the light of your potential, even during darker times.

Place the satchel on your altar and connect with it during each moon cycle to stay aligned with this energy. Let it serve as a lighthearted reminder that joy is always a choice, no matter the season. .

The satchels are a powerful symbol—a reminder that staying lighthearted and positive is a deliberate choice. It’s a way of carrying light with us, even when the world around us feels heavy. Choosing joy, hope, and renewal isn’t just an act of optimism; it’s an act of bravery. Especially during challenging times, these satchels are a tangible way to anchor ourselves in hope, fun, and possibility—a small yet monumental step toward creating the life we envision.

7. Closing the Ritual

To close, we’ll breathe together. Slowly. Silently. A breath between the veils of light and dark, of the past and future, of earth and Spirit.

The Summer Solstice reminds us that light and shadow are inseparable, and that our power lies in honoring both. From our garden rituals to our moonlit dances, this is a moment to celebrate life, beauty, and the unending cycles of the world.

And finally, as this is a celebration of light, of magick, and embracing that creative flow, we will dance it out. Personally, I love throwing on the Cupid Shuffle or some upbeat, fun music and just moving with joy. Let’s celebrate the light, the shadow, and everything in between with gratitude and a little groove!

Absolutely, if you’re doing this at home, don’t forget to dance it out! Even during solo rituals, I make sure to incorporate dancing. It’s a powerful way to raise energy and build momentum, keeping our Spirit vibrant and alive. Dancing is just as essential as grounding—no matter how reluctant you might feel, it’s a step you just can’t skip. Trust me on that one!

Closing Thoughts to Celebrate Midsummer

The Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, is a beautiful reminder of life’s natural rhythms—the balance between light and dark, beginnings and endings. At its highest point in the sky, the sun brings energy, abundance, and hope for the season ahead. Rooted in ancient pagan traditions, this day honors the connection between nature and spirit, and modern festivities like bonfires, flower crowns, and soaking up the sun keep that magic alive.

Whether you’re exploring ancient traditions, grabbing flower garlands, or creating your own Litha rituals, this moment is a chance to honor the cycles of nature, plant flowers, and celebrate the radiant strength of the Sun during this powerful midsummer moment.

How are you celebrating this midsummer’s eve? Whether it’s embracing old rituals or creating new ones, there’s so much joy in sharing these traditions. Need inspiration? Check out my recent Litha post for ideas, history, and ways to honor the solstice energy in tune with the Earth’s rhythms.
