Immigrant Protection Spell for Peace and Justice (Modern Witchcraft)
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” — James 4:7
I created this protection spell from witnessing real harm, fear, and injustice, especially toward our Indigenous brothers and sisters being targeted by ICE. This is the kind of work where spells protect, not perform. Where magic becomes a shield. Where intention becomes action.
This is not about panic. This is not about performative spirituality. This is about standing rooted in Spirit and choosing protection over paralysis.
What I’m sharing here is a ritual shaped by what I’ve learned along the way. Teachings I’ve encountered, circles I’ve sat in, and protection traditions I’ve been honored to witness, including Hoodoo-rooted work. It’s not about mixing practices for aesthetics. It’s about blending energy with intention for collective good.
This is what witches for justice and witchcraft activism look like in real life. Grounded. Intentional. Protective. Rooted in care, responsibility, and Spirit-led action.

What Is a Protection Spell in Modern Witchcraft?
A protection spell is a form of spiritual protection magic designed to create safety, reinforce energetic boundaries, and guard against negative influences.
In modern witchcraft, protection magic can help you:
Create a protective shield and energetic barrier
Dispel negative energy and unwanted influences
Reinforce boundaries around your body, home, and space
Guard your family, community, and sacred work
Protection spells are not about attacking energy. They are about defense, safety, and stability. This is protective magic that preserves life, not harm.

Witchcraft Activism and Protection Magic
Witchcraft activism is the practice of aligning spiritual power with justice and community care. It’s where ritual meets real life. Where intention becomes protection.
When people say “hex the patriarchy,” what many are really naming is dismantling harmful systems, not harming individuals. Modern witches are shifting toward protective, stabilizing magic that supports safety and collective wellbeing.
Protection magic in witchcraft activism can include:
Casting protection spells for marginalized communities
Creating protective sigils for safety and boundaries
Performing group protection rituals
Setting energetic wards on homes and community spaces
This work isn't flashy. It’s steady. It’s rooted in care. Protection magic doesn’t escalate harm — it buffers communities from it.
Quiet power.
Steady power.
Protective power.
And that’s real purpose of modern witchcraft.
If you want to go deeper into this practice,

What Is Hoodoo and What Is Run Devil Run Oil?
For this protection spell, I worked with Run Devil Run oil, a traditional uncrossing and protection formula rooted in Hoodoo and African American folk magic. Hoodoo was born from oppression, survival, and resistance. It exists because communities needed spiritual protection when physical safety was denied.
This is ancestral protection work.
I learned to make this oil at Salem Witch Fest in a class led by Dr. Finch, an apprentice of Charles Porterfield, an esteemed, hoodoo practitioner, rootworker and community elder. The oil was charged in a group ritual focused on collective protection and justice. Being part of that space was something you feel in your bones, and I carry that energy into this work with deep respect.
If you choose to work with Hoodoo-rooted tools, do so with education, humility, and awareness of cultural lineage, not as interchangeable aesthetic props used solely for personal gain.

How to Be an Ally During ICE Activity (While Staying Safe)
Now for real-world action if you witness ICE activity. This information is for general awareness only and is not legal advice. Laws vary by location. Always prioritize personal safety and follow local regulations.
1. Stay Informed, Not Reactive
Follow trusted immigrant rights organizations. Avoid spreading unverified information that creates panic or puts people at risk. Information should calm communities, not inflame fear.
2. Be a Witness From a Safe Distance
If legal in your area, calmly document from public spaces. Never physically intervene or block movement. Presence alone can increase accountability and reduce harm.
3. Carry a Whistle for Community Safety
A whistle is a simple, nonviolent safety tool. If someone is in immediate danger or needs attention, a loud whistle can alert nearby people without escalating the situation. It draws witnesses, creates awareness, and shifts energy toward protection rather than confrontation.
4. Know What to Look Out For
Stay aware without assuming or escalating. ICE agents may wear tactical vests marked “POLICE” or “ICE,” use unmarked vehicles, or operate alongside local law enforcement. Awareness is about preparedness, not panic.
5. Ask Accountability Questions as a Witness or Ally
If it is safe to speak, you can calmly ask questions that create transparency without interfering physically:
“Is this person being detained?”
“Are they free to leave?”
“Do you have a judicial warrant signed by a judge?”
“Can you show the warrant?”
“What agency are you with?”
Speak slowly. Stay respectful. Avoid arguing. The goal is visibility and accountability, not confrontation. If the situation feels volatile, step back and focus on documenting safely.
6. Share Real Resources That Protect People
One powerful organization is United We Dream — the largest immigrant youth-led network in the U.S.
Share trusted Know Your Rights resources from organizations like United We Dream to help immigrant communities stay informed and protected.
7. Support Mutual Aid and Legal Defense
Donations, rides, court support, housing networks, and bail funds create tangible protection beyond social media posts.
8. Protect Your Nervous System
Ground. Breathe. Drink water. Rest. You are more effective regulated than burnt out. Peace is the goal. Calm is power. Change doesn’t happen overnight, but consistency builds safety.
If You Witness Someone Being Detained
If you see someone being detained and it is safe to do so. Ask their name if possible and tell them that you will keep praying for them.
Carry them in your thoughts. Send intentions for peace, protection, and justice. Even when you cannot physically intervene, your focused prayer and awareness still matter.
Candle Choice and Spiritual Protection Energy
For this ritual, I chose a black candle because it felt right to me.
Black candles are traditionally used in protection magic for:
Absorbing negative energy
Strengthening protective barriers
Defensive magic and warding
Banishing unwanted influences
White candles symbolize peace and clarity. Black candles add an extra layer of energetic defense, which aligned with the intention of this protection spell.
Trust your intuition. Choose what supports your work and most importantly, light candles that feels right in the moment.

Protection Spell Ritual for Immigrant Safety (Step by Step Guide)
This protection spell is designed to create a protective circle, strengthen your energetic shield, and reinforce spiritual protection for peace, justice, and safety. It's something i created that simply felt right in the moment. I say this because I implore you to do what feels best for you and your spiritual practice and always use what you have available.
Intention is the most powerful protection spell.
Move slowly. Let this be embodied, not rushed.

Other powerful protective herbs include dried rosemary, crushed ay leaves basil, sage, thyme, mugwort, hyssop, and angelica root. I cover deeper plant correspondences and protection work inside my Protection Herbs Witchcraft Guide if you want to expand your practice.

Step 1: Set Sacred Space
Call in your guides, set up your sacred space, and sit with your intention and name name it clearly:
You are casting a protection spell for peace, justice, and safety for our immigrant brothers and sisters, especially those impacted by ICE activity. Take a few grounding deep breaths and don't rush this.
Slow your breath. Ground your body. Feel your connection to earth.
This is where protection magic truly begins.
Step 2: Create the Protection Salt Blend
Add your herbs slowly into the salt. Pick them apart with your fingers, and allow yourself to be immersed in the art and the poetry of what you're doing and remember who you're doing it for.
With each pinch, repeat:Protection. Peace. Justice. Power. Safety.
Let this step be deliberate. This charges your protection spell with focused energy.
Step 3: Cast the Protective Circle
Sprinkle the salt blend around your candle or workspace.
Visualize:
A protective shield rising
Harm being blocked
Negative energy dissolving
Safety surrounding those you are praying for
This becomes your ward and energetic barrier.
Step 4: Dress the Candle
Apply Run Devil Run oil (or protection oil) to your black candle.
Move slowly. Let your hands become part of the prayer.
Hold steady focus on protection, peace, and justice.
Step 5: Recite the Psalm Three Times
With respect to using run devil run oil, we will recite James 4:7 three times.
“Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.” Play with your voice, tone, breath, and emotional presence. Send protective energy outward toward the people who need it most

If there are any families you want to name for this protection spell, now is the time to do so.
Step 6: Light the Candle
Light the candle and sit with the flame.
Hold awareness on protection, peace, safety, and justice.
Allow the candle to burn safely. Protection spells strengthen with patience and repetition.
Never leave a burning candle unattended. Keep away from flammable objects and pets.
Important Safety and Balance Reminder for Magical Protection
Protection work is meant to support your life, not pull you into constant fear or hyper-vigilance. After ritual work, return your focus to ordinary life. Eat. Rest. Move your body. Connect with people you love.
Staying balanced keeps your nervous system regulated and your magic healthy. When you live in stability, your protection work becomes clearer, stronger, and more sustainable. Magic works best when it is woven into a full, grounded life.
Best Timing for a Protection Spell
This protection spell works beautifully during:
Full Moon
Dark Moon
New Moon
Waning Moon
Saturdays are traditionally strong for protection magic, but the most important timing is when Spirit calls you to act. [You can Learn More about Magical days of the Week Here]
Reinforcing Protection After the Spell
Protection magic doesn’t end when the candle goes out. It strengthens through consistency and daily intention.
You can continue building your protective energy by:
Creating charm bags to carry with you or place in your home
Placing protective symbols near doors and windows
Carrying black tourmaline or other grounding stones
Salting thresholds and entryways
Practicing daily grounding and nervous system care
Protection is not one-and-done magic. It’s a living ritual practice that grows stronger the more you tend it.

Using Protection Spells to Shift the Collective
You do not need to be loud to be powerful. You do not need to be perfect to make impact. When you are anchored in truth, your presence alone carries weight.
Small actions still ripple. One protection spell. One intentional candle. One moment of choosing care over fear. This is how real change takes root — steadily, wisely, and in alignment with Spirit.
